// Simple multisession updates doesn't seem to work well //

Postby RickTrelles on Sun Jan 13, 2008 7:03 pm

I became interested in Romeo for the feature of updating data DVDs.

Only now I could really check the feature because I'm running under Windows 2000
and I could not install Romeo 2.0. So now I'm trying the beta 2.02.61

My needs are very simple: I have disk partitions that I want to keep backed up
with new additions or modifications in them.

To try to do that I created a project dragging the drive letter of a partition, and
all the current folders showed in the project. Then I placed a DVD in the burner
with previous updates of the same partition and had the option "Replace files on
disc if modified..." checked. There were a new folder and a few new files in
other folders, *but Romeo went ahead and burned the whole partition* doubling the
used space in the disc. I tried the whole thing burning to a blank disk, then added new folders
and files to simulate an update, and Romeo burned the whole thing a second time
too.

Also, now I start to realize that even if the update above were done well, Romeo
will not update new folders or files at the root of the partition. Is that so?

Thanks,

Seems you are right. Let us check this.

BTW, Did you install beta version on Windows 2000?

Sure, I only could check Romeo when beta 2.02.61 was released.

Now I checked again with version 2.2.1.68 (under Win 2000 as always).

Romeo yet insists on burning the same folders and files again in the new session.

Also, *new folders and files aren't even recognized* in the project. Does it mean
that I would have to add them manually?

Well, Rick.
We have test the continue multi-session once more and it works fine.
May be you are expecting any visual state of multi-session?
Can you make the following steps:
1. Create empty project. Add files to it & burn it. Don't click Done or Close button of Romeo Disc Burner when burning will be finished, right-click on the list of operation log and select "Save to file..." menu item.
2. Don't change your disc - you will continue your multi-session, am I right?
3. Add some new files to your project & burn it. Once more - don't click Done or Close button of Romeo Disc Burner when burning will be finished or you've got some message (error/warning/info, etc.). Right-click on the list of operation log and select "Save to file..." menu item.
Then send us the log of 2 operations so we can really answer & solve your problem (if it exists).

I created a new project with a total of 4 files and burned them. Then I got out or Romeo (that's what one would do in real operation). Then I got into Romeo again and selected the same project, and selected burn. Romeo went ahead and *burned the same 4 file again*. I didn't find a "list of operation log" to right-click on it and select "save to file". But I right-clicked on the Information list in the romeo disc burner dialog, there appeared a "save to clipboard" option, I did it and captured the first report I am sending separately.

Then I added 2 new files in the same folders of the project, and manually added the files to the project. I ran Romeo one more time and selected the project. When I commanded to burn, Romeo went ahead and burned *6* files now. Then I captured a new report as I did before, which is the second I am sending in the message.

In the Information list in the romeo disc burner dialog, this time there was a line reading "Found 6 new file(s) to continue multisession on disc".

It seems Romeo doesn't compare the folders and files in the project with the actual folders and files, to make a list of what's new to burn.

Rick

The reports above are huge and I couldn't send them by private message. If you want, I can email them to you. If you repeat my test above you should get the same results too.

Rick,

Hm, the situation seems to be strange.
Please email logs on support@romeoburner.com or put somewhere on ftp and post link to it here.

BTW. Did you select "continue multisession" radio button and enable "Replace files on disc if modified date or size changed" check box?

I made a CD multsession test and it seems Romeo (version 2.3.0.70) always find new files even if none is added.

My test (same project all the time):

1. I added 2 folders with mp3 and burnt
2. Then I added 2 more folders and burnt: at this point Romeo reported that it "Found 47 new file(s) to continue multisession on disc". 47 is the sum of the 4 folders. So it seems it burnt all instead the 2 new folders only
3. After that I didn't add any file/folder and I just pressed Burn button; Romeo reported it "Found 47 new file(s) to continue multisession on disc" again and it seems it burnt all files
4. Next I repeated step "3" above. Romeo reported the 47 new files but this time there was no free space to continuing.

My conclusion: Romeo is always burning all files.

I hope it helps. :)

PS: BTW. Did you select "continue multisession" radio button and enable "Replace files on disc if modified date or size changed" check box? Yes and yes.

PS 2: note that if you open the burnt CD in Explorer you won't see any duplicate files.

Hello, Rick!

We found the error and fixed it - the problem was in GMT offset of date.
Now multi-session will work fine. You can download latest beta as always from there:
http://www.romeoburner.com/files/demo/a ... _setup.exe
Check the version of beta - it will be 2.3.0.71.

OK. Romeo is no longer reburning existing files. Thank you.

But, if there is a new file in a folder of the project, that file is not recognized and isn't burned.

It seems very practical being able to update backups of whole folders or disk partitions. Romeo could compare the main folder or disk partion in the project with the actual folder or partition, to burn everything changed *or new*.

Currently, it seems one has to run another utility to compare the contents of the project with the actual thing in the disk, and then *manually add each new file in the right place in the project*.

Could you help with that?

Thank you,

Good. Thank you too for finding problem and describing it. It really helped.

In this case I can propose to use command line burner directly with your real folders on the hard drive without using Romeo projects.
You can find information about command line burner in the Romeo Help or use this link http://www.romeoburner.com/help/Romeo/RomeoCmd.htm
